Personal bio:
Hi.  My name is Wendy and I am a stay at home mom.  I have decided to try a new adventure and make fleece diaper covers to sell.  I think when I was about 5 years old my grandmother taught me how to sew.  What fond memories I have sitting next to my grandmother making things.  I guess that is why I love taking fabric and making something cute and usable out of it.  My grandmother always said when you make something with love it turns out great.  So you will find each one of my items made with love and care.

Finding absorbent underwear/diapers for those with special needs

This is a follow up to last week's post which was an introduction to cloth diapering those with special needs.

Suzanne's Special Kids is an Etsy Cloth Diaper team shop that specializes in cloth diapering items for bigger children (and adults). It began for her for several reasons. Many are the same reasons everyone else does…cost, environmental issues, and the cuteness factor. She found as her son got older he had sensitivities to many brands of disposables so health reasons began to factor in. Her main reason to use cloth is that she doesn’t wear gel stuffed paper underwear so doesn't feel like her children should either! Her son actually gives that “ahhhh” relief sigh when he's changed into cloth after wearing a disposable. They call them absorbent underwear at their house - they're not going on babies anymore, afterall!

It's surprisingly difficult to find cloth diapers and accessories for people sized larger than "toddler". There are WAHM’s that make larger sizes but they can be quite difficult to find. Searches tend to find mass produced items or unrelated items even when you refine your search. She searched for several months just to find base patterns to sew her own before starting her business. Even now there are limited patterns available for purchase. But, you can find them WAHM made, and the quality and uniqueness are well worth it

Getting to know Petite Krott Creations:

What got you started in selling items in your Etsy shop?
I enjoyed knitting and had experience sewing diapers for my little girl, so I decided to offer up my items for sale.
Where did your shop name originate?
My shop name, Petite Krott, comes from a nickname my father calls my little girl.  Is is a french term of affection...much like saying cutie pie or something similar.
What is one piece of advice you wish someone would have told you when you started cloth diapering?
When I cloth diapered my little girl, I used flannel diapers found at thrift stores and my own handmade diapers under nylon pull on covers.  It was only four years ago, but there wasn't as much selection as there is now.  I never learned about wool as a diaper cover until she was almost potty trained.  Many people still don't know about this amazing option as a diaper cover.  So, I wish someone would have told me about wool soakers, shorties, longies, etc. when I was first starting out.
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not sewing/working for your shop?
When I am not sewing or knitting for my shop, working outside the home, or studying for my Bachelor of Education courses, I really enjoy relaxing with and spending time with my family.
What is your current favorite item in your shop, and why?
Right now my favorite item is my Ribbie pattern because it has been in the works for a long time now.  It is a one size fits most knit wool soaker design.  I have had many requests for the pattern and after much testing it is finally released!
What is your favorite material to work with?
I really love kntting with buttery soft wools like Purewool, Cestari, BFL, and Gaia.
How long has your shop been open?
My 2 year anniversary is coming up in September.
Personal bio:
I am a mother of a 4 year old princess.  I have a loving husband of almost 5 years.  I work 6 months out of the year as a laboratory instructor in a University.  I am working towards my B.Ed. part-time. I enjoy spending time with my family, knitting, and sewing in my spare time.

Diapering older children (and adults) with special needs

Submitted by Suzanne of Suzanne's Special Kids

There are many of the same diaper (or absorbent underwear, as we call it) styles available for larger children and adults as there are for babies. Choices include: all-in-one, pocket diapers, and fitted diapers with separate covers. Each choice has pros and cons; the most realistic way to deal with this is to purchase just 1 of each style and try them out. Build your stash with a few styles so you can meet your loved one's needs. Caregivers tend to feel better when they are doing what they feel is best for their loved one. This is just one of many options you may not even realize you have!

Older children, teens and adults who need absorbent underwear have very unique needs when it comes to diapering.
  • They should have stylish options that are age appropriate but still functional and fun.
  • The underwear/diapers needs to be very absorbent but trim.
  • They shouldn’t be obvious under clothing (so no over-stuffed bubble bums), nor should the clothing need to be sized up to fit over the diapers.
The common fabrics absorbent enough in a baby’s diaper often need many more layers in the larger sizes. The thickness of so many layers has led me to search out other blends of fabrics to keep things trim.

Fit is also very important, and sometimes the hardest part; if they don’t fit correctly, they will leak and you won’t be happy with them. Non-ambulatory wearers usually have very skinny legs and rounder bellies, whereas people with other types of disorders may have very thick thighs. There is a definite need for “build specific” diaper options.

Fears about cloth diapering older children and adults
Disposable products are pushed heavily even by healthcare providers. They fear skin problems from soiled cloth remaining on the skin for long periods of time. Soiled undergarments should be changed immediately whether they are cloth or disposable. Proper changing routines eliminate that concern.

Many people think that it’s hard to use cloth personal care items.  They fear dirty diapers, and have sanitation concerns. "It must be time consuming and difficult to handle and use cloth undergarments" "They couldn’t hold the necessary amount of liquids for an older child much less an adult." Through hands-on experience I can honestly say that these fears are not necessary. Proper fit and absorbency will take care of most of those issues. I dump solid waste in the toilet and flush it away. Diapers and wipes are washed and dried on hot-sanitation concerns are not necessary. Bleach is not needed and I only use about ¼ of the detergent the bottle states. I love to line dry these as well. The sun removes stains and kills any bacteria the hot wash doesn’t.

Little Moose Diapers: Fluff-A-Rump featured member and giveaway

Shop link: http://www.littlemoosediapers.etsy.com
Blog link: www.littlemoosediapers.blogspot.com

Getting to know Little Moose Diapers:

What got you started in selling items in your Etsy shop?
After sewing cloth diapers for my children, I contemplated selling them. After much prayer, and with the enthusiastic support of my husband, I began to sell on ETSY.  Initially I began to sew cloth diapers out of personal necessity.  I had switched roles from working outside the home to being a stay at home mom, and for us, using cloth diapers was a financial savings. Over the last 2 years, my reasons to use, make, and sell cloth diapers have grown.  I see sewing and using cloth diapers as a way to be a better steward of the earth.  The finances brought in from my sales help my family to purchase homeschool curriculum for our five children.
Where did your shop name originate?
I struggled to find a fun name for my business.  It seemed all the 'good' names were taken.  I began to pray and brainstorm about a name.  One night, while feeding the baby, the name Little Moose Diapers was born.  Being from Maine, it was perfect - cute, fun, and revealing of my locale.  It's a bonus that my own son was nicknamed Moose by friends.
What is one piece of advice you wish someone would have told you when you started cloth diapering?
How to deal with ammonia buildup.  I have found that for us personally, keeping a dry bucket in a cool
place and laundering everyday with vinegar controls our problems.
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not sewing/working for your shop?
I have five children ranging in age from 3 months to 10 years.  We absolutely LOVE meeting at the park for our Homeschool 'social' days.  The children get to play with friends while the mommas visit and chat.
What is your current favorite item in your shop, and why?
Right now, I am LOVING my trainers - that's why they are my giveaway item.  They can be made using my new prepped prefolds, or your used prefolds. With side snaps and a waterproof shell, they make potty learning a little easier.
What is your favorite material to work with?
I am amazed by the properties of the Bamboo Fleece, how absorbent and soft it is.  In the month of June, I will be introducing a new item - the Little Moose One - a one sized cloth diaper made using Bamboo Fleece.
How long has your shop been open?
My shop has been open since February 2009
Personal bio:
I worked as a Registered Nurse before becoming a stay at home, homeschooling mom.  My days are filled with schooling, sewing, and tending the home - not necessarily in that order.  My husband and I have been married for 14 years, and reside in a small town in Maine.  On our weekends, we spend family time enjoying the Maine woods with fishing, camping, and scouting trips.
