Adjustable AIOs

Jenni from LilBees here, excited to tell you about my latest creation!

My primary frustration with newborn size diapers is that the baby grows out of them so fast. But small diapers can be bulky on a newborn, and may end up leaking since a newborn's legs are usually quite skinny. I don't like snaps in the crotch (who wants one more thing there, right?). Fitted diapers are often made adjustable with a fold-down front for their extra row of snaps, but an AIO (all-in-one) diaper cannot have that type of fold-down or it would leak.
So what's a mama to do?!
This diaper is the solution I came up with for my own son: A small AIO diaper with an extra row of snaps so that it can be done up tighter (and with a shorter rise) during those first days or weeks. The inside layer is soft (either velour or flannel) so it will not irritate that tender belly button even though it will cover it.
This photo shows my son wearing this design at about 8lbs (dark blue) and 13 lbs (light blue).

I've just stocked my first of these at LilBees, and plan to stock more in the coming couple of weeks.

Introducing I Dream In Green

photo links to idreamingreen's shopcloth diaper cake
I just joined the Etsy Cloth Diaper Street Team and would like to introduce myself!

I am Elizabeth, mom to Grace 6, and Rue 2, and now the proprietress of idreamingreen on Etsy where I have begun selling cloth diaper cakes. Eventually I will be offering gift cakes and bouquets made from other reusable and functional cloth items. You’ll also see a few knitted items here and there, as I love wool almost as much as cloth diapers.

Why cloth diaper cakes?

First of all, I love cloth diapering for many reasons including saving money, lowering my environmental impact, and never running out of diapers. Plus I think cloth is more breathable and comfortable for my babies (neither of their bums has ever touched a disposable diaper!). But I was really inspired to start idreamingreen after getting some requests for cloth diaper cakes at Park + Vine, the awesome “green general store” where I work. Before making the first one, I looked around online for ideas, but saw very few that I liked. I wanted to make something that would show off the natural beauty of simple cloth diapers, without being gaudy, cutsey (read completely unappealing) or “fake” looking. The first cake turned out just as I had wanted, and I was hooked! I hope to be able to send lots of beautiful cloth diaper cakes out into the world as special gifts for new parents who are just starting out with cloth diapers.

So what exactly is a diaper cake?

Very simply, it is a bunch of useable diapers and other baby essentials that are artfully arranged to look like a cake. Why? Well, its fun, and its cute. What other reasons do you need? They can include baby skincare and bath items, clothing, receiving blankets, toys, and more. My cakes are made exclusively from high quality, eco-friendly reusable diapers and cloth wipes. Any other diapering accessories, organic clothing, toys or natural skincare items can be added on from there.

In case anyone is wondering, when not “baking” diaper cakes, my time is spent naturally mothering (homebirthing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, homeschooling), cooking healthy local food, knitting, researching green buildling/renewable energy, and keeping up with laundry.

Why use bamboo fabrics?

I offer diapers with both Bamboo/organic cotton Fleece and Bamboo/organic cotton Velour and often get questions as to which is better. I love them both but both appeal to people for different reasons.

Bamboo Fleece:

What is bamboo fleece? It is similar to the fabric used to make your favourite sweatshirt. The jersey side is silky soft and the fleecy side is fluffy soft. The fleecy side can get pilly initially, however I like using it both ways and my girls have never expressed a preference either way. The weight I use is extremely absorbent, moreso than the velour, and is slightly bulkier than the velour. Most of my girls' diapers are made with bamboo fleece. Banana Bottoms fitted cloth diapers will not need extra doublers. Of course, there will be the few exceptions to this but I use mine comfortably through naps and night time with no leaks.

Bamboo Velour:

What is bamboo velour? Bamboo velour fabric is silky soft and very yummy. As a next-to-babe fabric, the softness can't be beat. (I have a skirt made from this and it is great!) This is very popular with diaper makers and with good reason. It provides a slim layer of absorbency, reducing bulk in a diaper. I don't find it's weight to be as absorbent as the bamboo fleece, so Banana Bottoms diapers are paired with bamboo fleece using velour as the inner layer and topper on the soaker, providing the softness of the velour and the super absorbancy of the fleece.

Either way, you can't go wrong with bamboo fabrics. They are all highly absorbent, extremely soft and silky and perfect for use with cloth diapers.
