Where did you get the name for your shop?
My husband has been calling me the hippy chick (well, the crazy hippy chick) for some time now. My desire is to make cute & practical diapers so I switched it to "Chic" and voila Hippy Chic was born.

Is it big business or a hobby?
At this moment, it's teetering that line between hobby & serious business. I'm hoping to grow into a big business.

Why do you like selling on Etsy?
I love the wide reach Etsy has. I've had customers from all over, from so many different backgrounds. The format of Etsy is also very user friendly - and for a seller, they make it very easy to do paperwork at the end of the month!

How long have you been sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc.?
I remember my mother teaching me how to sew in middle school. Throughout college I made extra money sewing doll clothes & household decor.

What is your favorite thing to make at the moment?
I'm on a patchwork kick lately. I love playing with a variety of prints (lately the bolder the better) and combining them to make something exciting & new.

What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about a lot of things. Cloth diapering is definitely toward the top of that list. Having cloth diapered 2 kids & used disposables for 1, I really get the savings and environmental impact. I also know how overwhelming the world of cloth can be in the beginning so I am always happy to help someone just starting out!

What is your favorite thing in your shop at the moment? Why?
I have a couple sets of baby doll diapers with a little wipes case. These were made at the request of my daughter and I've really enjoyed watching her "be like Mommy" while tending to her dolls. She has even turned an empty box into her "washing machine" for when her dolly's diapers need to be washed.

Who/What is your inspiration?
Mostly my kids. My youngest especially likes to test the limits of diapers (size and absorbency) so he is the inspiration behind a lot of design changes as I go. As for colors, I love to wander the fabric store and have fabric jump out at me (and yes, sometimes it's months from the date I purchase it to the date I figure out what I want to make with it!)

Why is cloth diapering important to you?
My initial interest was "green" - as in more money in my pocket. I started using them when my second child was born. I was instantly hooked. The environmental impact of disposables is huge. Even if you only cloth diaper part time, the diapers you're not sending to the landfill is a big deal. It's funny, one of the first reactions people have is the "ick" factor of having to wash the diapers - but since I've been cloth diapering I find that on the rare occasion I have to use disposables, the smell and "ick" factor of sposies is overwhelming. Can't believe I didn't notice any of that with my first baby!

What is your favorite cloth diapering memory?
Last summer we decided to spend a week at my father's camp. There's running water but no laundry facilities. I really didn't want a week's worth of sposies hanging around. So I followed an online tutorial and made myself a washer with a 5 gallon bucket. Every morning I washed the previous days diapers and hung them up to dry. Seeing all those cute little cloth diapers hanging out front of my father's "hunting" camp was priceless. And I felt rather proud of myself for being able to cloth diaper without a washing machine! (and now you see why my husband calls me the crazy hippy chick!)

  2. Thanks. =) It was kind of fun. You can get quite a work out with a plunger and a 5 gallon bucket. LOL
